Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev.—Bailey Gaspar homered in both games, including a grand slam shot in the nightcap, to help give UH Hilo a doubleheader sweep over Western New Mexico on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Palo Verde High School, 10-5 and 8-5.
The pair of wins means the Vulcans are now 5-2 on the season, while the Mustangs dropped to 0-7. UH Hilo now travels to St. George, Utah for the Dixie State Easton Classic, which begins on Thursday with a test against No. 19 nationally ranked Colorado Mesa (5:30 MST).
Gaspar hit her fourth and fifth home runs of the season. Last year during an all-region and All-American year, she hit six total.
In the first game, the Vulcans struck early. Freshman
Danielle Antolin made her second collegiate hit a memorable one with a solo home run. Gaspar followed two batters later with another shot over the fence to give her team a 2-0 lead.
UHH would add a four-spot in the fourth inning to give starting pitcher
Billi Derleth all the run support she would need. Four hits, a walk and a Mustang error contributed to the run parade. Two more runs in the fourth and sixth innings would serve as insurance.
The Vulcans had 14 hits in game one—three by
Mari Kawano, and two each by
Kristen Ishii,
Maria Steadmon and
Danielle Pulido. Ishii and Steadmon had three RBI each and a double, while Pulido drove in two.
Derleth improved to 2-1 on the season, going the distance. She survived a four-run Mustang uprising in the third inning and scattered nine hits, five runs, walked four and struck out five.
In the second game, it was the Mustangs that struck first. Western New Mexico scored two unearned runs in the first inning and kept the Vulcans off the scoreboard until the third stanza.
But the UH Hilo bats came alive in that fateful third and took advantage of WNMU wildness in the pitcher's circle. After two walks and a hit batter put ducks on the pond, Gaspar followed with her fifth home run and first grand slam of the year.
Kacie Freudenberger singled, and then Pulido blasted her second home run of the season to push six runs across the plate before the Mustangs were able to get an out.
That would give the Vulcans more than enough runs to get the win. Pulido finished the game with a 3-for-3 line, while Steadmon again had two hits and drove in a run.
Meanwhile, senior pitcher
Danielle Wilson pitched her second complete game of the season to pick up her second win (2-0). She tossed seven innings, allowed seven hits, walked two, struck out four and was charged with just three earned runs. She didn't give up a hit through her last three innings of work.
