UH Hilo basketball players Devin Johnson and Safia Sheikh are you Pepsi Athletes of the Week for the first week of January.

Junior forward Johnson had 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Vulcans dropped just their second PacWest game of the season on Saturday against Academy of Art. The Battle Ground, Wash. native hit 10 of his 14 shots from the field and blocked two shots as the Vulcans fell to the Urban Knights, 74-64. On Wednesday in a 73-65 win over Notre Dame de Namur, Johnson must missed a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds. For the week, the Lower Columbia CC transfer had 34 total points and 18 rebounds.

Senior sharpshooter Sheikh scored 13 of UH Hilo's final 16 points during Saturday's (Jan. 6) 68-63 overtime win over Academy of Art. She totaled 23 points, six rebounds and three assists in the victory, hitting five three-pointers along the way. After scoring just two points in the first half, she netted 21 points after intermission. For the week, she had a total of 34 points, ten rebounds and six assists.
