Hilo Headlines: The Vulcans wrap up the home portion of their 2018 schedule with matches against Hawaii Pacific and Point Loma this Saturday and Tuesday. UH Hilo split the first two matches of the four-game homestand, topping Concordia (2-1), while falling to Biola (4-0).

Sack the Sharks: On Saturday, the first 50 fans through the gate will receive a free UH Hilo Vulcan reusable grocery sack.

Wait, There's More: In addition, from here on and forever more, all UH Hilo and Hawaii Community College students will receive free admission to any Vulcan athletic event. Just bring your valid ID card, show it at the door, and you are in!!

Senior Salute: The Vulcans will honor eight seniors after Tuesday's match against Point Loma for their contribution to UH Hilo athletics. Remember, the match starts at 7:30 p.m., with no women's match prior. The eight seniors are Andrew Dawrs, Trenton Hooper, Bradley Doyle, Jack Stonehouse, Christian Ohly, Xahil McDonald, Curtis Walker and Nick Williams.

Grounding the Eagles: The Vulcans picked up a wild and stunning win over Concordia on Oct. 11 to kick off the homestand. Forward Matt Wilkinson scored twice in the final 16 minutes to lead a come-from-behind effort towards a 2-1 victory over the Eagles, who came into the match at 2-1 in the PacWest. Wilkinson scored in the 77th minute, working a give-and-go feed with Tyler Waltjen, and then blasted in the match-winner at 88:15 on a free kick from 25 yards outs.

Finding the Net: Junior transfer Wilkinson (England/Santa Barbara CC) now has seven goals in ten matches, which ranks seventh in the Pacific West Conference. Those seven goals also cracked the UH Hilo Single Season Top 10 list, tied for fifth. The school record for goals in a season is held by Dustin Daley (2007), who had 10. Wilkinson's 14 points is tied for ninth in that category.

Minding the Net: Senior goalkeeper Nick Williams picked up his second shutout of the season during the win over Academy of Art on Oct. 4, pocketing five more saves as well. He had 12 saves against St. Martin's on Sept. 13, tying the UH Hilo single-match record in that category, now shared with Paul Elias (2011 vs. Dixie State). He had ten more against Hawai`i Pacific (Sept. 20) and now has 63 on the season. That puts him third all-time for a single season, with five matches still to be played. The single-season UH Hilo record for saves is shared by Yonha Andrabi (2012) and Marc Fournier (2006) with 67. In his two seasons at UH Hilo, Williams has 112 saves, which is fifth all-time. The UHH career leader is Marc Fournier (2006-07) with 120.

Ocean Foes to Visit: The Sharks and Sea Lions will visit Paiea Stadium on Saturday and Tuesday to wrap up the home season. Hawaii Pacific is coming off a 2-0 victory over Concordia on Saturday to move to 2-3 in PacWest play, prior to a Thursday match against Point Loma. Jair Espinoza leads his team with three goals and four assists in 2018 (10 points). The Sharks crushed the Vulcans earlier this year in a non-conference match on Oahu (4-1) and HPU now leads the all-time series between the two teams, 18-8-2. Point Loma sits in third place in the PacWest Standings with a 4-2 conference mark, prior to their matches with HPU and Chaminade this week. The Sea Lions won back-to-back matches over Holy Names (3-0) and Dominican (4-1) to improve to 8-5 on the year. PLNU's Tim Siegfried leads the PacWest with 13 goals on the season, an average of just over one per match, and he ranks eighth in the country. He also has three assists for 29 total points. Wiktor Lasota is the top goalkeeper in the PWC in Goals Against Average, allowing 1.3 goals per match. He also leads the PacWest with four shutouts. The Sea Lions won the match versus the Vulcans last year in San Diego (3-0) and PLNU leads the all-time series between the two, 3-2-1.

Around the Loop: Azusa Pacific is still unbeaten in conference play (5-0) and they are 10-1-1 on the year. Fresno Pacific (4-1) is second, followed by Point Loma and Biola (tied for third) at 4-2. APU and FPU meet head-to-head this week. The Vulcans sit above three teams in the standings with a 2-4 PWC record.

Regional Ratings: The first official NCAA Division II regional ratings came out today (Oct. 17). Three more rankings will come out before the final one will be used to help determine the six men's teams that will advance to the NCAA tournament. The conference champion from the PacWest, the CCAA and the GNAC will all gain automatic berths, followed by the next three highest ranked teams. Here is the ranking for Oct. 17….(1) Simon Fraser 13-0, (2) Azusa Pacific 10-1, (3) Cal State LA 10-1-2, (4) UC San Diego 9-2-2, (5) Fresno Pacific 8-1-1, (6) Cal Poly Pomona 9-4, (7) Chico State 8-3-1, (8) Cal State San Bernardino 9-4.

What's Next: After the four-match homestand, the Vulcans will wrap up the 2018 season with road excursions at Dominican (Oct. 29), Notre Dame de Namur (Nov. 1) and Fresno Pacific (Nov. 3).

An Opener to Remember: New leader Paul Regrutto won't soon forget his 2018 debut, when the Vulcans pulled off a 1-0 stunning upset of Western Washington in Bellingham. Despite being out-shot 29-3, UH Hilo scored the lone goal of the match on Matt Wilkinson's shot (Alen Acosta assist). The week previous, the Vikings were ranked No. 13 nationally. "I don't think that I have ever been a part of a match where a team was out-shot 29-3 and still won," Regrutto said afterwards. "We made a lot of game-saving tackles and just didn't give them a clear shot at anything."

The Coach: Paul Regrutto returns to Hawai`i Hilo, the same place that he began his coaching career in 2006. That inaugural Vulcan team finished 5-9-1. He spent the bulk of his coaching career at his alma mater, Colorado State-Pueblo, where he was the head women's coach from 2013-16. He had a 36-31-6 overall record for the Thunderwolves, including a 14-5-1 mark in 2016, leading CSU-Pueblo to their first-ever NCAA berth. He was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. He also served as an assistant coach at Cal State San Bernardino (2012), and from 2007-11 he was the lead assistant for the Thunderwolves men's program.
