Big scoring numbers are a common thread for today's University of Hawai`i Hilo Pepsi Athletes of the Week.

Senior James Griffin helped lead a comeback for the ages during a near upset of No. 9 nationally ranked Point Loma on Saturday at the Civic. The 6-5 transfer (West Liberty) had a season-high 25 points, hitting six three-pointers including four in the final three minutes as the Vulcans rallied from a 31-point deficit to cut the margin to three. He also had 18 points and seven rebounds against Concordia and added 22 points and seven boards in a win over Hawaii Pacific. For the week, he had 65 points, an averaged of 21.7 a game.

Scoring, rebounding and bulls-eye marksmanship at the free throw line paved the way for Allie Navarette to earn this week's Pepsi Athlete of the Week. The sophomore inside player had 26 points against Point Loma, 25 versus Concordia and 18 against Hawaii Pacific to tally 69 points for the week. She had double-doubles against the Eagles (14 rebounds) and Sea Lions (13 boards) for a total of 31 rebounds in three games. Most impressive was her ability to take advantage of her opportunities at the free throw line. She hit 14-of-15 against PLNU, 10-of-10 versus Concordia and was 7-of-9 against the Sharks--for a 91 percent accuracy mark (31-of-34).

Both Vulcan hoop teams will hit the road this week for games at Holy Names (Thursday) and Notre Dame de Namur (Saturday).
