WAIKOLOA, Hawai`i--
Andrew Otani fired a career-best 67 to finish in fifth place, helping to launch his Hawai`i Hilo team to a sixth place finish at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate men's golf tournament at the Waikoloa Kings' Course.
Otani's round was the low score of the day, putting him at -1 for the tournament (72-76-67). As a team, the Vulcans clipped nine strokes off their Tuesday round and they were 16 shots better than they were on Monday (303-296-287). At +22, they were just one stroke out of a tie for fourth place with Western Washington and Concordia (+21).
Sonoma State was the runaway title winner with a -1 tally, 14 shots better than second place UC San Diego and Cal State Monterey Bay (+13).
Otani, a sophomore from Honolulu (Iolani School), had five birdies in his collegiate-best round and no bogies. His previous best round was 68, shot twice this fall at Saint Martin's and Western Washington.

Warren Miller shot an even-par 72 today to finish +4 for the tournament (72-76-72) to finish tied for 13th. The Vulcans'
Evan Merrier had the third best round of the day in the tournament with a 69, a career-best for the junior (79-82-69).
No. 3 nationally ranked Elis Svard of Cal State Monterey Bay took home medalist honors with tournament tally of -9 (71-66-70). He won by five strokes over Blake Bourelle of Sonoma State (73-70-69). Aidan Thain of Western Washington was third (-3), and Hayden Hui (UC San Diego) finished one shot in front of Otani at -2.
This wraps up UH Hilo's Fall portion of their 2019-20 schedule. Their next tournament will also be at the Waikoloa Kings' Course--the Division I Amer Ari Intercollegiate., Feb. 6-8.
