The Hawai`i Hillo volleyball team capped a 23-7 regular season with wins at home over Holy Names and Academy of Art, and swept the Pepsi Athlete of the Week awards in the process.
Libero
Kaila Lizama had the perfect ending to her Senior Week during two matches at home. In front of family and friends, the Kapaa, Hawai`i native helped her team to two more victories from the service line and on defense. In a three-set win over Holy Names, she zipped in a career-high five service aces, and she had one more in a five-set thriller over Academy of Art. She had 36 digs on the week, 17 versus the Hawks and 19 against the Urban Knights. For good measure, she ripped a kill on a full swing during a key moment against ART. On the season, LIzama leads the Vulcans with 571 digs (4.92 per set) and she has 30 aces, third best on the team.
On Senior Night, it was freshman
Emily Wade who almost stole the show. The Vulcans fed the 6-foot-3 middle blocker on numerous key plays and she came through time after time. She finished with 17 kills in the victory over the Urban Knights, hitting .444 in the process. She also had two solo blocks and nine block assists in the nail-biting win. On the week, she had 23 kills and 14 assisted blocks. For the year, the Sacramento native has 27 solo blocks and 101 assisted for 1.24 per set, second best in the PacWest. She leads the Vulcans (sixth in the PWC) with a .338 hitting percentage and is second on the UHH squad in kills with 2.72 per set.
The Vulcans, who finished second in the PacWest with a 18-4 record, now await Monday's NCAA Selection Show (2:30 pm Hawaii time) to find out their postseason fate.
