Box Score 2 KAILUA-KONA, Hawai`i—In what is becoming their home away from home, the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans rolled to a pair of victories over Academy of Art at Kealakehe High School, 10-1 and 9-3.
The Vulcans are now 6-0 this year at the Kailua-Kona school, and 10-0 at Kealakehe over the past two year. With the dual victories today, they remain in second place in the Pacific West Conference at 20-8 in league play and they are 27-14 overall. Academy of Art is now 9-8 in the PacWest and the Urban Knights are 13-14 overall.
The two squads will wrap up the four-game series on Saturday with a 1 pm doubleheader at Kealakehe. The teams are playing on the west side of the Big Island because of heavy rains in Hilo.
Kiarra Lincoln went 4-for-5 on the day and
Isabelle Mejia pitched the Vulcans to a win in the first game and hit a double, triple and drove in three runs in the second game to fuel UHH in a pair of important wins.
Mejia also drove in two runs in the first game (five RBI for the day), including a two-run single during a seven-run second inning.
Vevesi Liilii had a two-run blast in the inning and Lincoln drove in a pair of runs with a single.
Mejia cruised from there, improving to 10-2 on the year. She didn't give up an earned run, going the mercy-rule five innings and giving up just four hits, walked one and fanned six.
In the second game, the Vulcans put things away again in the second inning. This time they scored five runs on just one hit—a three-run triple by Mejia. They also scored three-runs in the fifth, supported by a two-run homer by
Skylar Thomas, her fifth of the year.
Thomas, Mejia, Lincoln and
Rayla Jacobs-Kea had two hits each in the game.
Valerie Alvarado went the distance in the pitching circle, giving up three runs, five hits and six walks. She improved to 8-5 on the season.
Lauryn Henderson had two hits in the nightcap for the Urban Knights, including a two-run bomb in the fourth inning.
