Over the course of a very successful week in UH Hilo athletics, tennis player Martin Soukal and baseball star Dylan Sugimoto have been named the Pepsi Athletes of the Week.

Senior outfielder Dylan Sugimoto earns the award for his work over a long weekend---one in which the Vulcans swept Holy Names, as the red-hot team won their 12th straight game. Sugimoto, who was one of 13 seniors honored after Monday's game, raised his batting average 36 points in the four games to .333. He went a scorching 7-for-11 in the four games, scored four times, drove in three runs, hit a double and walked four times. In the series opening win, the Waipahu native hit a two-bagger in the bottom of the ninth that helped jump start a four-run rally in a 5-4 comeback win. On the year, the scholar athlete is tied for the team lead in runs scored (29) and stolen bases (9-10), leads in on-base percentage (.438) and is second in batting average (.333). The Vulcans, 22-15 overall and 18-10 in the PacWest, head to Point Loma this weekend with second place in the conference on the line.

Freshman tennis player Martin Soukal had a good week at the Pacific West Conference Tennis Championships, and for that matter, has had a very good year. While at the tournament in Surprise, Arizona, the Czech Republic native was named the PacWest Freshman of the Year, thanks in part to his 13-1 singles record on the season and his 13-3 doubles mark. In Surprise, Soukal won all three of his singles matches as the Vulcans reached the title match. The 6-foot-5 rookie defeated Leyton Bohren of Azusa Pacific in a tense match, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3), and also stopped Hawai`i Pacific's Benjamin Loccisano, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. In doubles, he teamed with Vaclav Slezak to top the nationally ranked APU doubles team of Jakob Schnaitter and Jesse Haas, 6-3. Soukal and his teammates now await the announcement of the NCAA regional tournament field, which the Vulcans hope to host, May 13 or 14.
