ALAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.—This is one for the record books.
The Hawai`i Hilo men's tennis team rolled to a 4-0 win over Bluefield State College on Tuesday morning at the NCAA Division II National Championships, notching their first-ever Sweet 16 win. The #4-seeded Vulcans now advance to the Elite Eight, where they will take on #5 South Carolina-Aiken on Wednesday at Sanlando Park in Alamonte Springs (Orlando area).
The Vulcans made quick work of the Big Blues (West Virginia), taking the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 wins, while also capturing three singles bouts to clinch the match.
UH Hilo improved to 14-4 on the year on the 86-degree Florida day, while Bluefield State's season ends at 15-10.
The Vulcans notched their first point with victories on courts one and two in doubles.
Vaclav Slezak and
Martin Soukal took the win at No. 1 with a 6-2 pasting of Giorgi Datashvili and Frederik Baumadsen, while
Alessandro Giuliato and
Chun En Wu triumphed by the same score on court two over Arthur Figuiere and Luke Busse.
In singles, it took very little time for Giuliato to win on court two, taking a 6-1, 6-0 win over Baumadsen. The sophomore lefty improved to 14-0 on the year in singles play with the cruise win.
Wu was next with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles over Thomas Schmieta to give the Vulcans a 3-0 lead. That would leave Slezak next in line to wrap things up, and he did with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Figuiere to account for the 4-0 team final.
Wednesday's opponent USC-Aiken advanced on Tuesday with a hard-fought 4-1 win over Drury (Mo.). The two teams went to a tiebreaker in all three doubles matches, with the Pacers taking the team point. SC-Aiken then took three of four singles matches in tight battles to clinch the match.
The match between the Vulcans and Pacers will be an afternoon match in Florida, with first serve set for 4 pm Eastern time (10 am in Hawai`i).
"It's a national tournament win, it feels good," said Vulcan head coach
Kallen Mizuguchi. "Tomorrow will be much tougher obviously. We will get some rest, hydrate and get ready for a very difficult match on Wednesday."
