Vulcan volleyball schedule announced

The schedule awaiting the new coach of the 2019 University of Hawai`i at Hilo volleyball team features two early season tournaments, two long road trips to California and a seven-match homestand.

The Vulcans, who went 21-7 overall in 2018 and 17-5 in the Pacific West Conference, will open its 2019 season in Honolulu at the Hawai`i Challenge, facing Chico State to kick-off the season on Sept. 6. They will play four total matches in Honolulu and four more the following weekend at the D2 West Region Showcase in Pomona, Calif. At Cal Poly Pomona, they will play in an upper tier tourney, based on their strong record last fall. They will take on fellow top teams from the CCAA and GNAC in Cal State Monterey Bay, Seattle Pacific, Western Washington and the host Broncos.

Conference rivals Chaminade and Hawai`i Pacific visit on Sept. 21-22 to tip off the conference schedule. The Vulcans will then play five matches in northern California (Sept. 28-Oct. 5), return home for seven matches (Oct. 10-28) and then hit the road again for matches on Oahu (two) and southern California (four). UHH will wrap up the regular season with home matches on Nov. 20 (Holy Names) and Nov. 23 (Academy of Art).

The Vulcans, who return nine players from that 2018 squad, will announce their new program leader in the coming weeks. 2017-18 coach Gene Krieger left the program this past spring.
