Two basketball players that put up a lot of points in a pair of home games are the University of Hawai`i Hilo Pepsi Athletes of the Week for the final week of January.
It was too hard to deny Vulcan forward
Kupaa Harrison his fifth Pepsi title this year and his third straight honor. The 6-foot-5 senior hit a buzzer-beating three-point shot in overtime on Monday night during a 79-76 win over Holy Names, and he had 24 points and eight rebounds in a 71-61 upset of Concordia on Thursday (Jan. 23). He had 12 points in the second half and 16 total against the Hawks, and made it a double-double with 10 rebounds. He also had five assists. His totals in the two wins were 40 points, 18 rebounds, seven assists and a game-winning three-pointer.
Another multiple winner was chosen for women's basketball.
Allie Navarette had her two highest scoring games of the season, with 27 points in a 84-74 upset attempt of Concordia and she had 25 points in a 79-58 victory over Holy Names. That gave her 52 total points for the pair of games, and she also tallied 13 rebounds. The 6-foot post did a lot of her work at the free throw line, hitting a sizzling 13-of-14 shots against the Eagles and 4-of-4 versus the Hawks (17-for-18 total). For the season, the Torrance, Calif. native is shooting .848 at the free throw line, fourth best in the PacWest. She is also sixth in scoring (18 ppg) and sixth in rebounds (8.3).
The Vulcan hoop teams wrap up this four-game homestand with Friday (Jan. 31) games against Academy of Art and Sunday (Feb. 2) versus Chaminade. Start times will be 5 pm for women and 7:30 pm for men at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
