ST. GEORGE, Utah—The 2020 Dixie Courtyard Classic didn't go quite as UH Hilo head coach
Callen Perreira envisioned it.
On Saturday, the Vulcans dropped their fourth straight, this time on a walk-off grand slam home run by Colorado Mesa's Bailey Kleespies in the bottom of the seventh to send the Vulcans to defeat, 8-5.
The Vulcans lost to the defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions, a team that has won over 40 games in each of the last four years. With the loss, UH Hilo leaves Utah with a 1-4 overall record, while the Mavericks moved to 4-1.
UH Hilo will now travel to Tucson, Arizona for the Cactus Classic, taking on seven different teams from Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, beginning on Thursday.
Kleespies capped a five-run Maverick rally to end the game the same way that UH Hilo fell to host Dixie State yesterday—in walk-off fashion.
Trailing 5-3, Colorado Mesa rapped out four hits in the seventh, and Kleespies home run came with two outs.
Earlier, Junior first baseman
Skylar Thomas hit the go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning to give UHH a 5-3 lead. They had trailed 3-1 after the first inning, but tied it at 3-3 in the second on
Vevesi Liilii's home run and Kiara Lincoln's RBI-single.
But the Mavericks finally got to starting pitcher
Valerie Alvarado in the seventh. Alvarado had been cruising after a rough first inning, but her run came to an end with Keespies blast.
The Vulcans will open the Cactus Classic on Thursday against Western New Mexico.
