HILO, Hawai`i—Five newcomers will join the University of Hawai`i Hilo volleyball program this coming Fall, announced today by Vulcan head coach
Chris Leonard.
The UHH volleyball class of 2020 includes three National Letter of Intent signees and two roster invitees, all coming to UH Hilo as freshmen.
The five newcomers expected to join camp in August include
Camilla Chun (Honolulu),
Nicole Logan (Huntington Beach, Calif.),
Teia Magaoay (Tracy, Calif.),
Tani Hoke (Kailua, Hawai`i) and
Chloe Culanding (Chesapeake, Virginia).
The group of five joins a Vulcan roster that features 13 returnees from the 2019 UH Hilo team that finished 23-8 and went to the NCAA tournament.
"We are excited about our incoming class that will add size, talent and depth to a very strong returning lineup," Leonard said. "We strive to 'get better every day' and each of our incoming players embody the character, work ethic and athletic skills that will help us achieve our team goals."
Camilla Chun was a four-year varsity player in high school, playing her senior season (2019) at Farrington and her junior year at Moanalua. For Farrington, she was an OIA All-East First Team selection, leading the Governors in kills. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter was an honorable mention all-state pick, and also played beach volleyball and competed in track and field. The National Letter of Intent signee played club volleyball for Spike and Serve VBC. "Camilla is an athlete!" Leonard said. "She is super athletic and hard-working. She will bring a very competitive mindset into our gym."
Nicole Logan was the Most Valuable Player at Edison High School in Huntington Beach last Fall. She was a first team all-league selection as a senior and earned second team honors as a junior. She was a scholar athlete all four prep years and played club volleyball for the Seal Beach Volleyball Club. Logan signed an NLI with the Vulcans. She is a 6-foot-2 outside hitter. "Nikki is a hard and high-ball hitting outside that will bring additional size and power to our program," Leonard assessed.
Chloe Culanding was an All-Region 6A selection at Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. A left-handed opposite, Culdanding was a four-year starter at Grassfield and was named to the Chesapeake Scholar Athletes Superintendent's Team. The 5-foot-8 standout played club volleyball for Beach Elite and South East Region VBC. "Chloe is a high-jumping, hard-swinging lefty opposite," said Leonard. "She was a team leader on her high school and club teams. She is a great volleyball player, a leader and has the competitive mindset and character that will help us improve."
Tani Hoke is a 5-foot-4 libero/defensive specialist that prepped at Maryknoll School on Oahu. She played club for the Aloha State Volleyball Club under Head Coach Gabby Matautia (former Temple U. standout) and club director Kolby Kanetake (2-time All-American libero at UH Manoa). "Tani has high level club experience and has been playing under outstanding coaches," Leonard said. "She will add to our relentless defensive mindset in the gym."
Teia Magaoay went to Tracy High School (Tracy, Calif.). She is a 5-foot-6 setter who played club volleyball for Synergy Force VBC. As a senior, the Bulldogs went 27-9 with Magaoay as a setter and won the Sac-Joaquin Section Championship. She was a two-time All-TriCity Athletic League selection. Tracy went 30-7 during Magaoay's junior season. She is also the niece of former UH Manoa men's standout Barry Magaoay. Magaoay signed a NLI with the Vulcans. "Teia is lightning quick and has a skillset that is well-suited to the quick offense that we want to run and she is also a very good defender," Leonard added.
The Vulcans are scheduled to begin practice in mid-August for the 2020 season. "This class is solid," the second-year coach concluded. "I expect them to come in, work hard and compete every day to help make our team better."
