UH Hilo's 2019-20 senior class did not get a proper send off because of COVID-19. While some were able to have a Senior Day, all of them missed their Athletic Senior Sash Ceremony and official Graduation Ceremony.
Over the past few months, we have highlighted our seniors, two at a time. Instead of the Pepsi Athletes of the Week, it's now Pepsi Seniors of the Week. This week, we honor volleyball standouts
Kaila Lizama and
Armani Moultrie.
Senior libero
Kaila Lizama had a banner year for a Vulcan team that advanced to the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 2011. She set a school record with 582 digs on the season and had 35 digs in a wild 5-set win at home over conference champion Azusa Pacific. That total ties for fifth best in the Vulcan single-match record book. The Kauai native had 860 career digs, seventh in the Vulcan all-time book. She had 30 service aces, third highest total on the team. She had 29 digs each in back-to-back matches against Fresno Pacific and Dominican, and was named the PacWest Defender of the Week. The 5-foot-7 defensive specialist ranked fifth in the PacWest in digs. Lizama, who recently married former Vulcan tennis standout Vaclav Slezak, was named to the PacWest Scholar-Athlete team with a 3.32 GPA in Psychology. She graduated in the spring.
Middle blocker
Armani Moultrie had the best season of her career as a senior in 2019. She played in 25 of the squad's 31 matches, starting in 21. The Inglewood, Calif. native had 143 kills and a .276 attack percentage, with 44 total blocks, including eight solos, The 5-foot-11, fifth-year Vulcan had a career-best 17 kills during a three-set win over Fresno Pacific, hitting .556 in that match.
