As it turns out, St. Louis Field on the campus of Chaminade/St. Louis School, is the home away from home for the UH Hilo men's and women's soccer teams this spring.
The Vulcan teams will wrap up their 2021 spring season with a pair of matches against Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific this coming weekend with both matches being played at St. Louis--like their last two matches back on Feb. 27-28.
The Vulcans were originally scheduled to host both the Silverswords and Sharks in Hilo, but the new Vulcan soccer field is under construction and there was no other suitable place to host a match between availability and pandemic protocols. Hawaii Pacific experienced something similar with not having their own field, thus the games being played at gracious host Chaminade.
In that February trip, Coach
Paul Regrutto's team beat Chaminade 4-1 and lost to Hawaii Pacific, 1-0. The Sharks also defeated Chaminade twice, giving them an unblemished 3-0 record before facing the Vulcans in the spring finale on Sunday. With two wins this weekend, the Vulcans could tie for the Hawaii Pod title, which seems like a modest goal, one of many that Regrutto is thankful to be pursuing in this short season.
"In regards to this weekend, we want to continue to develop individually and as a team, and of course we want to win," Regrutto said.
It is a "free" year for Vulcan players, meaning that they can return to campus next Fall and still hold their current class standing on the soccer field. That makes this spring season, when they wouldn't normally get to play matches, a bonus in a way.
"This season means a lot to us," he continued. "Of course we would like to play more games, but we have to grateful that we get to play any games. This has been a challenging year for NCAA sports. Even a few games allows us to test ourselves and helps to validate the hard word we have put in."
The Vulcans will play the Silverswords on Saturday at noon, and the Sharks on Sunday at 11 am.
