GOODYEAR, Ariz.--Three out of the four UH Hilo women's golfers showed big improvement on day two of the RJGA Palm Valley Classic at the Palm Valley Golf Course in the Phoenix area.
Kaelyn Uchida shot a 77 to lead the Vulcans, using two birdies to help her improve five strokes from Friday.
Tori Hironaga shot a 78, also with two birdies and five shots better than the day previous.
Kasumi Goto checked in with a 79 on a 90-degree day, as the Vulcans cut 21 strokes off their opening day tally (321).
The Vulcans scored better than three other teams in the loaded 20-team field, but it wasn't enough to overcome a rough first day.
Point Loma also made a big jump, all the way into first place to claim the team trophy. The Sea Lions, ranked No. 9 in the country, finished at +6 for the tournament, and were -3 on Saturday. They zipped past second-place and No. 16 ranked Oklahoma Christian (+12) and No. 4 ranked Texas A&M-Commerce (+15).
Point Loma also claimed the medalist trophy. Nicole Kaminski shot a tournament-low round of 68 to finish two-under for the tournament. She edged Sarah Wongsmith of Texas A&M-Commerce (-1) who finished second. There was a tie for third between Alli Kim of the Sea Lions and Whitney Banz of Westminster (Colo.).
UH Hilo will now head south for a Monday-Tuesday tournament in Tucson at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon for the WT Desert Invitational.
