INDIANAPOLIS--The UH Hilo softball team earned the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 seed Western Washington on Wednesday (May 19) at the NCAA Division II West Region tournament in Irvine, Calif.

The Vulcans learned of the official selection while watching the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday evening in the Athletics Academic Success Lab. Host Concordia (26-11) is tne No. 1 seed and Biola (17-11) is No. 2. The top two teams both earned byes and will play on Thursday.

The Vulcans and Vikings will be the first game of the tournament at noon PT. The No. 3 seed is Northwest Nazarene (24-10) and they will play No. 6 Central Washington (15-14) on Wednesday at 2:30 pm.

48 teams in the eight NCAA D-II regions will begin play this week, with the eight winners advancing to the NCAA Championships, May 27-31 in Denver, Colo. at The Regeny Athletic Complex.

The Vulcans (17-11) won the Pacific West Conference Hawaii Pod. The Vikings (20-11) won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference tournament to earn the GNAC's automatic berth.

UH Hilo will depart on Monday for Irvine.
