Vulcans Dropped by Hawks in Four Sets

Samara Cruz put down a career-high 20 kills as Holy Names got the win.

HILO, Hawai'i – The Hawai'i Hilo women's volleyball team returned for the start of a six-game home stand but fell to Holy Names in four sets Wednesday evening in Pacific West Conference action at Vulcan Gymnasium.

The Vulcans made a late push to take set No. 3 and battled to the wire in a two-point losing effort for the final frame. Set scores were 23-25, 21-25, 25-19 and 23-25.

The opening set saw the Vulcans overcome 12 ties and two four-point deficits to take a 22-20 lead, but the Hawks rallied to take five of the last six points to steal the lead.

HNU clustered point-streaks of five and four scores to ride to a 2-0 lead before Samara Cruz (Escondido, Calif./Escondido HS) put down eight kills and Nikki Logan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) added six at a .750 hitting percentage in the third set to cut into the deficit.

The final set was a narrow back-and-forth affair, but the Vulcans just couldn't quite catch up as Holy Names closed out the victory.

Cruz tallied a career-high 20 kills to go along with 15 digs.

Logan also finished in double-digit figures with 16 kills.

Emerson Reinke (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS) dished out 43 assists as well as totaling a season-high 17 digs.
