HONOLULU, Hawai'i – It was like deja vu as the Hawai'i Hilo men's soccer team tussled with Chaminade to a 1-1 draw once again, this time Friday afternoon in Pacific West Conference play on O'ahu at Saint Louis School Field.
The two teams had met two weeks ago in non-conference action on the Big Island and also played to a 1-1 tie.
Hawai'i Hilo got on the scoreboard in the 21st minute after the Vulcans took advantage of an errant Silverswords' pass at midfield as Tom Vorkastner (Tangstedt, Germany/Gymnasium Heidberg) reversed possession to set up the score.
After charging up field, Vorkastner dumped the ball off to Gabe Gallardo, who pumped it forward to Bryan Schraier (Foothill Ranch, Calif./Trabuco Hills HS) and sent a long cross in and off the head of Julian Garcia (Albuquerque, N.M./Saint Pius X HS) to find the back of the net.
It was Garcia's second goal in consecutive games, as well as back-to-back matches with Schraier assisting on a score.
The Vulcans held the lead until the final minutes of the first half when Chaminade's Owen Caba found a small lane between defenders and volleyed a 20-yard shot up and over for the goal.
Both teams managed an even six shots in the second half but no one could get the edge as the two teams tied for the second time this season.
Christian Souza (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Damien Memorial School) got the start in goal, making his first appearance after missing the last four games. The junior finished with a career-high-tying five saves.
