Vulcans Grab First Win, Take Down Eagles

WAIPAHU, Oah`u--After two tight losses to open the season, the Hawai`i Hilo men's tennis team broke through on Sunday with a 4-1 win over Concordia at the Patsy T. Mink Oahu Regional Tennis Center.

The No. 4 nationally ranked Vulcans improved to 1-2 on the season, while the Eagles dropped to 0-3. UHH will wrap up this preseason Oahu trip with a match against Hawai`i Pacific on Monday at 11 am at the Kailua Racquet Club.

Martin Soukal remained unbeaten at No. 1 singles with a straight sets win, while Luca Matheiowetz and Joshua Liu both won on the singles courts for the Vulcans. That came after UHH won the doubles point, with Soukal and Alessio Demichelis clinching the digit with a 7-5 win on court one.

Luca Checchia and Agustin Gentile also won in doubles on court three, 6-2, to get the Vulcans on the board first. In singles, Checchia and Demichelis both won first set tiebreakers before having their matches halted after Matheiowetz and Liu won to clinch.
