HILO, Hawaii– The UH Hilo softball team broke in their brand new field with back-to-back mercies over Holy Names.
Eighteen runs scored and 21 hits summed up a great day of softball for the Vulcans. UHH won their first game 8-0 and the next 10-2, both going just five-innings before the run rule was enacted.
Game One: UHH 8, HNU 2 (Five Innings)
Alexis Lacy shined in the circle for the Vulcans, throwing her second shutout of the season. The freshman allowed five hits in five innings, striking out two batters.
Lacy defended her team's one-run lead, until the Vulcans could pack on some insurance runs in the fourth inning.
Five hits and one error lead to a five-run inning for the Red and Black, extending their lead to 6-0. Brandee Chinen singled to score the Vulcans first run (2-0). Taisha Bratton picked up two more runs with a base knock up the middle (4-0). To end a successful inning, Chloe Domingo smacked a double to deep center that scored two more (6-0).
Birthday girl Skylar Thomas hit a hard base hit to right field that scored the final two runs in the fifth inning, cementing the Vulcans 8-0 mercy.
Game Two: UHH 10, HNU 2 (Five Innings)
Holy Names jumped with the first lead in the second part of the day's doubleheader. HNU's Aly Cerda crushed a homer over center field to give her team a 2-0 lead.
Bratton responded in the third with a no-doubter of her own that scored three runs, giving UHH the one-run lead (3-2).
UH Hilo would go on to score two more runs in the third. Lana Kline came home off a wild pitch and Nikki Zielinski scored off of a double by Angel Prewitt (5-2).
The Vulcans scored another three runs in the fifth off a base hit by Domingo and a double by Prewitt (8-2).
Bratton sealed up the game with a double that cashed in two runs, solidifying the Vulcans run rule (10-2).
Sara Bhatt picked up her fourth win of the season, only allowing three hits in five innings of work.
The Vulcans face the Hawks again tomorrow at 12 and 2pm at the UHH Softball Field.
