SURPRISE, Ariz.--Three UH Hilo men's tennis players received PacWest Conference honors at the 2022 PacWest Conference Banquet for their performances throughout the 2022 season including Martin Soukal, Alessio Demichelis, and Luca Matheiowetz.
Soukal, First Team All-PacWest, has been ranked in the top 11 of ITA's singles for eight weeks. Soukal's highest ranking was third in the nation and he currently sits at No. 7 according to ITA. Soukal enters the PacWest Championships with a 12-2 record as the first court player. Eleven of Martin's wins were won in two sets, and only one match went to a three-set tie breaker. One of his two losses was to the No. 2 player in the nation.
Demichelis received Second Team All-PacWest honors with an 8-6 second-court record. Five of his wins were taken in two sets. Before the PacWest Championships Demichelis received PacWest Player of the Week for his win over Robin Sanz that clinched the Vulcans 4-2 win over at the time No. 4 Hawai'i Pacific. Half of Demichelis's losses were three-set matches.
As a pair, Soukal and Demichelis were voted Second Team All-PacWest. Soukal and Demichelis are 8-5 overall from the Vulcans' first court in doubles.
Matheiowetz picked up Third Team recognition as a strong middle-court player. Matheiowetz is 11-2 overall from the third, fourth and fifth courts. He is 2-0 from the third court, 4-0 from the fourth, and 5-2 from the fifth.
