KANSAS CITY, Mo. – United Soccer Coaches announced the College Team Academic Award winners on Thursday, recognizing exemplary performance in the classroom during the 2021-22 academic year.
The Vulcan women's soccer team posted a team grade point average of 3.40, ranking No. 373 amongst all 489 teams awarded.
A total of 783 soccer teams — 295 men, 488 women — had a team GPA of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the 2021-22 academic year.
Hawai'i Hilo last won the team academic award for the 2018-19 school year when it racked up a 3.37 GPA.
Daelenn Tokunaga: First Team Scholar All-American (Dec. 18, 2021)
In Dec. 2021, Vulcan forward Daelenn Tokunaga was named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Women's Scholar All-America First Team with a 3.75 GPA. The 2021 PacWest Conference Player of the Year was also later named PacWest Conference Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and PacWest Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Additionally, 20 Vulcans were named to the 2021-22 PacWest All-Academic Team in June for possessing a 3.0 or better accumulative GPA with at least two semesters at Hawai'i Hilo and having played in at least one game.
The Vulcans, under seventh-year head coach Gene Okamura, will begin their season Sept. 1 as they look to defend their PacWest Conference Championship with home matches taking place on their brand new on-campus field.
