Women's Volleyball Dropped by Chaminade in Straight Sets

HILO, Hawai'i – The Hawai'i Hilo women's volleyball team was dropped by visiting Chaminade in straight sets Sunday afternoon in an inter-island Pacific West Conference matchup at the Vulcan Gymnasium.

Vulcans were swept by scores of 25-11, 25-20 and 25-11.

After a rough opening-set that started with a Chaminade-eight-point lead, UH Hilo came close to evening the match by bouncing back from a late-six-point deficit by going on a 6-1 run fueled by service aces from Maile Goss (San Diego, Calif./San Marcos HS) and Samara Cruz (Escondido, Calif./Escondido HS). With the score hanging at 22-20, the Silverswords managed three consecutive points to close out the set.

The final set started even with both teams playing to an 8-7 score in favor of Chaminade, and from there, the Silverswords out scored the Vulcans 17-4.

Nikki Logan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) led the Vulcans with seven kills as Kamryn Childs (Syracuse, Utah/Syracuse HS) followed with five of her own as well three aces. Samara Cruz (Escondido, Calif./Escondido HS) came up with a team-leading 14 digs. Hawai'i Hilo hit just .021 on the match and had 10 reception errors.

The Silverswords hit .407 and was led by Greta Corti's nine kills, three aces and 11 digs. Lataisia Saulala had eight kills with zero hitting errors. Alexia Byrnes dished out 32 assists.

What's Next

Hawai'i Hilo fell to 1-7 and 1-1 in PacWest play while Chaminade improved to 7-6 overall, 2-0 PacWest.

The Vulcans will be back at Vulcan Gymnasium Wednesday night, Sept. 14 to host Fresno Pacific (3-3, 2-0 PacWest) at 7 p.m.

Chaminade will return to O'ahu to play Academy of Art and Fresno Pacific next weekend.

2022-23 PacWest Hawai'i Challenge

Chaminade has taken the early lead with head-to-head volleyball wins over Hawai'i Hilo and Hawai'i Pacific.

The next two weeks will feature men's and women's soccer non-conference matchups between the three schools.
