SEASIDE, Calif. – Hawai'i Hilo men's soccer team struck first with a fourth-minute goal but Cal State Monterey Bay responded by scoring four times to take the 4-1 win Monday afternoon in non-conference action at the Otter Sports Complex.
From the front-left edge of the penalty area, Tom Vorkastner's (Tangstedt, Germany/Gymnasium Heidberg) cross pass found the hard-headed Alexander Hernandez-Herbach (Pasadena, Calif./Pasadena HS) in position in front of the goal to head the ball off the Otters goalkeeper's chest and up and in for the early Vulcans lead.
The score remained until the 20th minute when Mason Ward raced his way past the Vulcans defense and got the equalizing-goal through the left side of the net.
CSUMB took the lead on a goal similar to the Vulcans' lone goal. Janos Kommerling's cross from the right side of the penalty area connected off Roberto Banegas' head for the lined-shot score.
With time running down on the first half, the Otters twice slipped their way through the Vulcans defense for scores from Banegas and Miguel Guerrero in the span of 53 seconds.
Neither team scored in the second half as the Otters had just one shot on goal the rest of the way. Hawai'i Hilo's lone shot-on-goal was the early score.
Christian Souza (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Damien Memorial School) got the start in goal for the Vulcans and took his first loss of the season to fall to 1-1. Anree Bogart (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake HS) played the second half.
Sophomore Matthias Milton notched his win of the season in goal for the Otters.
