Three Vulcans Place Top 10 at Chaminade Invitational

Emma Heidelmeier, Summer Corke and Lauren Runnels had top 10 finishes.

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – The Hawai'i Hilo women's cross country team returned to competition Saturday morning at the Chaminade Invitational at the Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park as three Vulcans finished with top-10 placements.

Emma Heidelmeier (21:26.4), Summer Corke (21:55.9) and Lauren Runnels (22:23.9) had finishes of seventh, ninth and 10th, respectively, to pace the Vulcans squad.

Heidelmeier's time set a new 5K personal best by nearly 20 seconds, beating the senior's previous time of 21:48.7 set back in Sept. 2019 at the Biola Invitational.

The Vulcans were edged by Chaminade by six points as Hawai'i Pacific claimed the top spot with a score of 22.

Sabina Boo-Rivera, Julie Hedlund and Lily Gavagan rounded out the times for the Vulcans.

Chaminade's Zoe McDonough was the top finisher with a time of 20:13.8. HPU had runners place in slots No. 2-5.

Orange Leukemia Awareness

Runners from all three schools donned orange wristbands and ribbons as September is leukemia awareness month.

It was also in honor of Chaminade cross country head coach Shadrack Nabea, whose son, Shadrack Nabea Jr., passed away earlier this month after battling with leukemia.

Nabea Jr. was 20 years old, a graduate of Mililani High School and a student at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.

Hawai'i Hilo Invitational

Next up for the Vulcans will be the lone home event of the season with the Hawai'i Hilo Invitational Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Grand Naniloa Resort. For the women, it will be the first 6K course of the season.

Hawai'i Hilo athletics will be giving out Gatorade Squeeze Bottle to first 50 UH Hilo fans who make their way down to support the women's cross country team.
