HILO, Hawai'i – After a great start to the season in non-conference play, the Hawai'i Hilo baseball team is now also off to a great start in the Pacific West Conference after opening with a 3-1 series win over Concordia University Irvine.
After game No. 2 was suspended Friday night in the sixth inning, the Vulcans concluded play Saturday afternoon with a walk-off score in the bottom of the seventh as Vance Oshiro came home for the run.
The two teams then went on to split the regularly-scheduled doubleheader as the Golden Eagles ended the series with a win.
GAME 2: CUI 3, UHH 4
- The Vulcans jumped on the scoreboard early as Casey Yamauchi led-off the bottom of the first inning with a triple to deep center field. Cody Min brought him home after inducing a throwing error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Cho.
- Aaron Davies got the start and had gone 6.0 innings with four strikeouts and just one walk given up and with two hit batsmen.
- After the restart, John Navarro took the mound for the Vulcans as CUI moved runners over with ground outs and a single to bring in two runs to even the score at 3-3 heading into the final frame.
- Colton Bulger entered in at pitcher for the Golden Eagles and after a lead-off walk to Vance Oshiro, he threw a wild pitch and intentionally walked Joshua Fuentes to put runners at first and second. Bradyn Yoshida's sacrifice-bunt attempt was fielded by the third baseman but the throw was wild as Oshiro raced home for the walk-off win.
GAME 3: CUI 4, UHH 6
- In his first start of the season, Chris Varljen brought in a pair of runs on a single to left field and later a sacrifice fly for the Vulcans' second and third scores of the game.
- Vance Oshiro had a 2-for-4 day with three RBI on two singles — both with two strikes.
- Eamon Velarde got the win, putting in 7.1 innings of work and notching six strikeouts while scattering 10 hits for three earned runs.
- Nick Hansen belted a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to bring CUI within two runs, but Orlando Leon Jr. ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.
- Jake Liberta entered the bottom of the ninth and notched his fifth save of the season for the Vulcans as they preserved the win.
GAME 4: CUI 2, UHH 1 (8 INNINGS)
- This game was a pitchers duel as CUI's Brett Finnel and Hawai'i Hilo's Nick Agacki combined for 23 total strikeouts and just one earned run given up by each in the seventh inning. Both allowed just two hits as Finnel gave up three walks and two hit batsmen while Agacki had just one of each.
- With two outs in the top of the seventh, Agacki surrendered his first hits in back-to-back at-bats starting with a RBI-double from Owen Gott and a single to right field by Landry Spitler.
- On the aforementioned latter hit, Gott raced around third and headed for home, but Vulcans right fielder Blake Tweedt gunned him out at home to prevent an additional run from scoring.
- The Vulcans equalized the score in the bottom frame as Bryce Tweedt took advantage on the basepaths after a walk and two wild pitches to dive home safely.
- CUI scored the game-winning run in the eighth with an RBI-double by Shane Wallace before the Vulcans were retired in the bottom half on three strikeouts.
