Softball Falls Twice on Day 2 of Kickoff Classic

Vulcans fell to No. 2 CSU Dominguez Hills and Cal State East Bay.

IRVINE, California – After an exciting opening day of action, the Hawai'i Hilo softball team continued the Concordia Kickoff Classic on Saturday with defeats by No. 2 CSU Dominguez Hills, 4-2, and Cal State East Bay, 11-6.

The Vulcans started the day early to take on the second-ranked team in the nation and evened the score late at two apiece in the top of the sixth inning, but Dominguez Hills answered back with three hits in the bottom frame to score a pair of runs to take the win.

Against Cal State East Bay, the Pioneers put up 11 runs through the top half of the fourth inning as the Vulcans responded with five runs on four hits in the following frame, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the steep uphill climb.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Trinity Favela recorded five putouts and four assists at second base against the Toros and had a pair of each against the Pioneers. She also had a three-base knock against CSUEB.
  • Dyoni Garcia had two hits with three RBI with a two-run homer against Cal State East Bay.
  • Lexie Tilton totaled three hits through both games.
  • Kanoe Piltz knocked a bases-clearing three-RBI double against the Pioneers.

WHAT'S NEXT

Hawai'i Hilo moved to 1-3 overall, 0-0 PacWest while CSU Dominguez Hills moved to 2-1 (0-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association) and CSU East Bay moved to 2-3 (0-0 CCAA).

The Vulcans will conclude the Concordia Kickoff Classic on Sunday against Colorado Christian College (2-2 overall) out of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Hawai'i Hilo will then prepare for a five-game slate Feb. 17-19 on O'ahu against HPU, Saint Martin's and Western Washington.

The first home opener will bea four-game, two-day Pacific West Conference series against Concordia University Irvine on Feb. 25-26 at the on-campus Vulcan Softball Field.
