Softball Makes No. 22 Golden Eagles Earn Series Sweep

Hawai‘i Hilo fell to No. 22 Concordia University Irvine, 3-2 and 3-2, Saturday afternoon.

IRVINE, California – The end result may not be what was wanted, but the battle along the way was well fought. Hawai'i Hilo Softball was swept by No. 22 Concordia University Irvine with twinbill losses, both 3-2, Saturday afternoon in Pacific West Conference action at Golden Eagles Field.

Tough losses for the Vulcans as they dropped their sixth-straight game to fall to No. 5 in the conference standings.

It was the fifth extra-innings contest for the Vulcans (2-3 record) and sixth for the Golden Eagles (3-3).

GAME 3: HAWAI'I HILO 2 - NO. 22 CUI 3 (9 INNINGS)
  • CUI managed to walk the game off in the bottom of the ninth with a bloop single to shallow center field to score the game-winning run from second base.
  • Rayna White got a much-needed runner on for the Vulcans with her third hit of the day in the top of the seventh to set up Dyoni Garcia's clutch two-run home run to tie the score.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, CUI singled twice to put two runners on with one out, but the Vulcans flashed their defensive prowess on a ground ball to second base. Kiani Nakamura started to turn the 4-6-3 double-play attempt, but Jayda Favela didn't think she'd be able to gun out the batter at first base and instead made the split-second decision to throw it home to stunt the game-winning run out on the tag at the plate.
  • The next 11 batters were put down in order for either side until Jessica Im doubled to set up Mary Baccay's walk-off hit for the Golden Eagles.
GAME 4: HAWAI'I HILO 2 - NO. 22 CUI 3
  • The final game of the series moved along quickly with just four total baserunners through five and a half innings of play.
  • Concordia University Irvine plated all three of its runs in a three-hit bottom-of-the-sixth frame.
  • Hawai'i Hilo rallied in its final at-bats as Rayna White drew a lead-off walk followed by Victoria Macias reaching on an error by the shortstop. Dyoni Garcia singled to juice the bases. Lexie Tilton brought a run in on a fielder's choice grounder followed up by a pinch-hit RBI single by Kanoe Piltz. But the game ended with a pop-up in foul territory to leave the game-tying run stranded at third base.
