Softball Rebounds with Back-to-Back Wins at Tournament of Champions

Hawai‘i Hilo fell to Cal State East Bay before defeating Chico State and Stanislaus State.

TURLOCK, California – The Hawai'i Hilo Softball team rebounded with back-to-back wins over Chico State, 3-0, and Stanislaus State, 11-5, as part of the Tournament of Champions, presented by the City of Turlock. The Vulcans opened the weekend of play with consecutive losses to No. 19 Cal State San Marcos (7-1) and Cal State East Bay (8-0).

Freshman Victoria Macias combined for eight RBI in the two victories, totaling four hits with a double and two home runs. Jayda Favela also racked up four base-knocks while Lexie Tilton added a pair of hits in each of the two wins.

The Vulcans' fourth game of the weekend, a matchup with Sonoma State, was postponed from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon due to inclement weather.

HAWAI'I HILO 0 - CAL STATE EAST BAY 8 (5 INNINGS)
  • Vulcans were held to just three hits as they were mercy ruled in a five-inning shutout. Hawai'i Hilo had just two additional at-bats over the minimum threshold (15) for a five-inning game.
  • After leaving two runners on base after their first at-bat, the Pioneers posted four runs with six hits in the bottom of the second inning. Cal State East Bay added a pair of runs in each of the following two innings.
  • Hawai'i Hilo used four different pitchers with Tehani Seto getting the start. Megan Yorba and Linsea Strauch came in for relief duty while Lauren Otsubo made her collegiate debut to induce the final out in the bottom of the fourth.
CHICO STATE 0 - HAWAI'I HILO 3 (6 INNINGS)
  • The Vulcans cashed in early at the plate as Jayda Favela led off the bottom of the first with a double to left field. After Rayna White drew a full-count walk, Macias drove them in with a two-RBI double.
  • Before the start of the second inning could start, the game was delayed for an hour due to lightning in the area.
  • Hawai'i Hilo went hitless over the next three frames at the plate but Macias broke the silence with a two-strike triple in the bottom of the fifth before Tilton once again followed up with a base hit, this time going for an RBI and a 3-0 lead.
  • Madison Rabe got the start in the pitching circle and went the whole way for her sixth win of the season. The sophomore scattered five hits while allowing one walk and nabbing four strikeouts.
  • Midway through the bottom of the sixth inning, rainfall caused a five-minute delay before the lightning returned shortly after. The decision was made to end the game after six innings.
HAWAI'I HILO 8 - STANISLAUS STATE 3
  • Hawai'i Hilo repeated its most recent formula for success by again getting things going right off the bat. Favela led off the game with a bunt single and White again drew a full-count walk. Macias cashed in this time with a three-run slam over the fence.
  • Stanislaus State responded by plating a run in the bottom half of the opening inning, but the Vulcans answered back even louder with a five-run second inning highlighted by a two-RBI double from White and a two-run home run by Tilton.
  • After a one-hour rain delay, the Warriors managed to come out to play with four base hits in the bottom of the second to score three runs and make it an 8-4 ballgame.
  • Megan Yorba entered the pitching circle and threw 5.2 innings of relief work with just one run allowed, moving to a 2-1 record on the season.
  • Macias added the Vulcans' final three runs, first on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and later with another two-run homer in the sixth inning.
  • Favela batted 3 for 4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored, along with recording five putouts and five assists at shortstop.
