Men's Basketball Falls to CUI in Overtime

HILO, Hawai'i – Brody Davis hit on both free throws with a fraction of a second remaining in regulation to force overtime, but Hawai'i Hilo Men's Basketball ultimately fell just short to Concordia University Irvine, 92-86, Thursday night in Pacific West Conference play at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

It was a wild final couple of minutes of action in the second half with the Vulcans trailing by as much as eight points with 2:25 to go, but back-to-back baskets from Nadjrick Peat and Jake Kosakowski quickly made it a one-possession ballgame. Davis hit a pair of free throws at the 0:36 mark and CUI added another to make it 81-79 with the Vulcans seemingly on the last possession of the game.

Julio Montes II's there-point heave fell empty, but Davis was fouled under the basket on the offensive board attempt with 0.9 left on the clock. Davis, the team's leading free-throw shooter (with more than 10 attempts — .788) nailed both shots to extend the game an extra five minutes for overtime.

CUI's Jaden Henderson (19 points) managed to score his final basket of the evening on the first possession to take the lead for the final time. Both teams each ended up making just one shot from the field in the OT period, but the Golden Eagles went 9 of 10 on free throws to help snatch away the win.

Davis finished with 14 points along with 15 from Montes II and 13 from Kosakowski.

Hawai'i Hilo moved to 1-2 in PacWest play (8-5 overall) as Concordia University Irvine moved to a 3-2 conference record (8-4 overall).
