SAN DIEGO, California – The Vulcans had three last-minute attempts for a potential game-tying basket, but the Sea Lions managed to hold on as Hawai'i Hilo Men's Basketball fell to Point Loma, 64-62, Saturday evening in Pacific West Conference action at the Golden Gymnasium.
Point Loma was able to outscore Hawai'i Hilo, 20-7, through the final 10 minutes of play but went 0 of 4 in the last two and a half minutes going up against the reigning PacWest Conference Defender(s) of the Week. Brody Davis got a layup to land at the 1:30 mark to make it just a two-point differential, but the Vulcans' final two possessions came up empty. Nadjrick Peat and Davis had the final looks under a crowded basket but were just unlucky in getting the ball to fall through the hoop.
Davis did a little bit of everything with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Julio Montes II led with 15 points, 5 assists and 3 steals as Andre Norris hit three 3-pointers to finish with 11 points, six boards and three steals.
It was another close affair through the early goings of the contest until Hawai'i Hilo closed out the opening half outscoring PLNU, 13-6, to take a six-point advantage into the break. The Vulcans built up to their largest lead of 11 points near the midway point of the second half, but that's when the Sea Lions were able to jump ahead going 7 of 11 from the field and 7 for 7 at the free throw line.
Hawai'i Hilo moved to 6-4 in PacWest play (13-7 overall) as Point Loma moved to an 11-1 conference record (18-4 overall).
