Men's Soccer Surges Past No. 10 Point Loma

HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Men's Soccer notched arguably its biggest win in program history after surging past No. 10 Point Loma, 2-0, Thursday afternoon in Pacific West Conference play at the Vulcan Soccer Field.

The Vulcans have now outscored opponents 9-0 through the last three contests — a 3-0 win vs HPU (Oct. 16) and 4-0 win at Chaminade (Oct. 18) — as Paul Waschkau recorded his second shutout of the season (sixth career) with two saves against the Sea Lions.

After a scoreless first half, the Vulcans jumped ahead on a corner-kick opportunity in the 65th minute. Kanilau Tolentino-Perry — who had just entered into the match one minute prior — launched from the right corner and across the goal connecting with Felix Drizinsky's header lobbed back over to Jakob Santiago to head in the go-ahead goal.

Hawai'i Hilo added on in a free-kick opportunity as Palli Ingvason launched from the right side through the system for Iago Perez Ferreiro to head in the insurance goal in the 83rd minute.

Thursday's win marked the first victory over a ranked opponent since a 1-0 win over No. 24 Western Washington on Sept. 11, 2018 in Bellingham. It is also the highest-ranked opponent the Vulcans have toppled — the other being a 1-0 win over No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona in Sept. 2008.

OTHER NOTES

  • Thursday's win snapped a seven-match skid to the Sea Lions, dating back to 2016.
  • Perez Ferreiro leads the team with six goals on the season, ranking tied at No. 9 in the Vulcans record books for a single-season total — Luis Lanz (2007), Eduardo Gutierrez (2009), Rayden Bala (2012).

  • No. 10 Point Loma: 8-3-1 Overall (4-1-0 PacWest)
