Men's Soccer Strikes Through CUI

HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Men's Soccer took down Concordia, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in Pacific West Conference play at the Vulcan Soccer Field. For the time being, the Vulcans have earned rights to first place in the league standings with 16 points.

Mirai Sato put the Vulcans on the scoreboard first in the 15th minute, connecting for a header from Palli Ingvason's free kick.

Just a few minutes later, a racing Ronan McFarland sent a cross in from the left side but was broken up by a CUI defender. Sato was in the right place at the right time to run over and hit a second-chance ball back in for Iago Perez Ferreiro to nail through his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

CUI inched back into the contest with a score in the 33rd minute, but Hawai'i Hilo redshirt-freshman Yoke Duku punched through his first collegiate score to seal up the victory in the 83rd minute. After an unsuccessful corner-kick attempt by the Golden Eagles, Kanata Taira broke up the second-chance opportunity to flip the script for the counterattack. In the final third of the field, Taira dumped the ball off to Duku to flush past the keeper.

The Vulcans sit atop the PacWest standings with just two games remaining. However, Hawai'i Hilo and CUI (second place) are the only two teams who have already played eight conference contests while the rest of the teams still have three or four remaining.
