Women's Basketball Falls to Jessup On Last-Second Shot

HILO, Hawai'i – Mindy Kawaha hit the backend of two free throw attempts to push the Vulcans ahead by one point with 21 seconds to go, but the Warriors managed to hit a jumper in the final second as Hawai'i Hilo Women's Basketball fell to Jessup, 53-52, Monday evening in Pacific West Conference play at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

With 0.8 showing on the game clock, the Vulcans had one last chance to snatch victory away from the Warriors, but Keirstyn Agonia's alley-oop layup attempt was too strong as the final buzzer sounded.

Hawai'i Hilo was chasing as much as nine points nearing the end of the third period, but a 9-2 run late in the fourth quarter put the home team up ahead at the 3:17 mark on KeanuMarie Huihui's made basket. After more than two minutes of coming up empty on both sides, Caiyle Kaupu helped push the Vulcans ahead with two free throws. Jessup's Andheya Aurelio managed to land a last-second 3-pointer in traffic for her first make of the game and to tie the score with 35 seconds.

It was chaos on the Warriors' last possession as the Vulcans defense collapsed the paint, but Brianna Byrnes managed to just toss up the ball and in for the game-winner.

Hawai'i Hilo moved to 2-12 in PacWest play (4-16 overall) as Jessup moved to a 6-10 conference record (11-13 overall).

OTHER NOTES

  • Agonias grabbed five rebounds to move to No. 7 all-time in the Vulcans record books with a career total of 341 — surpassing Bree Olson's ('19-'23) mark of 338.
  • Kaupu led with 17 points as Erica Ingram collected a personal-best 10 rebounds for the third time in her career.
  • The Vulcans stand tied at No. 13 in the PacWest standings with Concordia. Point Loma is at the top with a 13-2 conference record. Jessup is slotted in at No. 9.
