Women's Basketball Sinks Silverswords

HILO, Hawai'i – In the penultimate home game of the season, Hawai'i Hilo Women's Basketball took a big victory over Chaminade, 59-42, Thursday evening in Pacific West Conference play at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

The Vulcans faced a three-point deficit early in the second period but closed out the opening half by outscoring the Silverswords, 13-2, while going 9 of 10 at the free throw line. Hawai'i Hilo further expanded its lead by opening the second half with a 12-2 run for a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Keirstyn Agonias led with 20 points while shooting 8 of 11 at the free throw line. KeanuMarie Huihui followed with 15 points (7-9 FT).

As a team, the Vulcans sank 28 total free throws (.778), the most since making 29 (.806) also against Chaminade in March 2019.

Hawai'i Hilo moved to 3-12 in PacWest play (5-16 overall) as Chaminade moved to a 5-14 conference record (6-19 overall).

The Vulcans remained tied at No. 13 in the PacWest standings with Concordia. Point Loma is at the top with a 13-2 conference record and has clinched one of six PacWest Championships postseason tournament spots along with Azusa Pacific, Dominican and Westmont. Chaminade is slotted in at No. 11.

PACWEST HAWAI'I CHALLENGE: The Vulcans earned two points in the women's basketball category for the friendly competition between the three Division-II Hawai'i schools. After the fall season, Hawai'i Hilo and Chaminade were tied with a score of nine followed by HPU with seven. For women's hoops, the Silverswords still hold the lead with four points but now both the Vulcans and Sharks have two points with a chance to possibly tie in the final scoring breakdown. PLAY4KAY: Hawai'i Hilo Women's Basketball held its annual Play4Kay game in support of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Legendary hall of fame coach Kay Yow had a 22-year battle with cancer and had a vision of finding the answer in the fight against all cancers affecting women. Through Play4Kay, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund has awarded over $8.7 million with an impact across the nation. More information available at KayYow.com.
