Softball Opens PacWest Play With Sweep of 'Swords

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Softball opened the Pacific West Conference slate with a doubleheader sweep of Chaminade, 12-1 in five innings and 4-3 in nine innings, Saturday afternoon at the Silversword Field at Mauli Ola Sports Complex at Sand Island Park.

Kanoe Piltz exploded for six hits on the afternoon, scoring thrice and driving in a pair of runs. Freshman Hailey Gibson made her debut, going a combined 5 for 8 (.625) at the plate, and fellow freshman Mariah Antoque totaled five hits (three doubles) and three RBI.

The Vulcans tallied 11 and 14 hits, respectively, but left 13 total runners stranded in the latter contest.

Hawai'i Hilo moved to 2-0 in the PacWest (8-7 overall) as Chaminade moved to a 1-4 conference record (2-18 overall).

GAME 1: HAWAI'I HILO 12, CHAMINADE 1 (5 INNINGS)

  • Piltz brought the first run across the plate with a reach-on-an-error in the third inning to score Victoria Macias. The rest of the Vulcans run came as part of an 11-run top of the fifth on eight hits aided by five walks. Piltz drove in the first run of the frame with a bases-loaded RBI single and later closed the scoring with another RBI base hit to make it 12-1.
  • Also driving in runs with hits were Antoque, Jayda Favela, Lexie Tilton and Macias.
  • Madison Rabe remained undefeated in the pitching circle at 4-0, going 5.0 innings with no walks allowed for the complete-game victory.

GAME 2: HAWAI'I HILO 4, CHAMINADE 3 (9 INNINGS)

  • The Vulcans took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, highlighted by a two-out two-RBI triple by Chenoa Cainglit.
  • The score remained until reigning PacWest Conference Player of the Year Taryn Fujioka managed a full-count two-out two-RBI double in the bottom of the seventh before coming around to tie the game with consecutive wild pitches.
  • With two quick outs to start the top of the ninth, Piltz got the rally going with a base hit to center field. Cainglit fouled off three pitches to draw a full-count walk and Antoque followed up with the game-winning RBI double to left center.
  • Janessa Santos made her third start of the season in the pitching circle, going 6.2 innings before making way for Tehani Seto, who closed out the final 2.1 innings for the win (3-1).
