Rabe Tosses No-Hit Shutout in Twinbill Split with Menlo

ATHERTON, California – Madison Rabe matched a career-high eight strikeouts in tossing a complete-game no-hit shutout to cap Hawai'i Hilo Softball's twinbill split with Menlo on Monday afternoon in Pacific West Conference play at Wunderlich Field.

The Vulcans were walked off in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 2-1 loss in Game 1 before coming back with a 3-0 victory to split the doubleheader.

Rabe matched her career-high strikeouts total set just a little over a week ago in a win over Academy of Art. Eleven of the 13 balls put in play on Monday were induced fly outs.

Hawai'i Hilo moved to 13-10 in the PacWest (19-17 overall) as Menlo moved to a 6-11 conference record (7-21 overall). Vulcans remain at No. 6 in the current conference standings with Menlo at No. 8.

GAME 1: HAWAI'I HILO 1, MENLO 2

  • Vulcans lone run came in the opening frame with Kanoe Piltz — batting of the No. 2 spot — hitting a double and then trading places with Lexie Tilton on an RBI double for the 1-0 lead.
  • Menlo had two triples, both leading to scores, with the first an RBI hit in the bottom of the third. Jolena Velasquez managed to hit the second three-bagger to get a runner on in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Tehani Seto entered in the bottom of the seventh and sent the first batter faced down on strike three, but Alexia Lozano managed to knock the ball just beyond the reach of both Seto and Kiani Nakamura at second base for the walk-off RBI hit.

GAME 2: HAWAI'I HILO 3, MENLO 0

  • Vulcans made use of six free passes to first base, cashing in with a bases-loaded wild pitch and an RBI single to plate a pair of runs in the top of the second. Mariah Antoque knocked in the third run with an RBI double in the fifth.
  • Rabe earned her fourth win of conference play and is now ranked third in the PacWest with 37 strikeouts.
  • Jayda Favela led off the game with a hit-by-pitch, bringing her career total to 15 to move into No. 2 in the program record books.
  • The last Vulcans no-hit shutout was pitched by Lauren Avalos in an 8-0 win over HPU to close the 2023 season.
