LOS ANGELES, California – Hawai'i Hilo Men's Soccer continued its season-opening road trip with a tough defeat to No. 11 Cal State LA, 2-0, Saturday evening at CSULA's University Stadium.
The Golden Eagles managed to dictate stats in the box score, taking eight shots per half with eight on goal. Hawai'i Hilo had eight total shots overall (three on goal) with zero corner-kick attempts.
After a scoreless opening half, CSULA managed to get on the scoreboard in the 57th minute with an own goal by the Vulcans. Cal State LA sent a cross in from the left side of the penalty area as Hawai'i Hilo freshman Gudmundur Ingason's defensive-stop attempt deflected the ball straight through the posts to make it a 1-0 deficit.
As time winded down, the Vulcans had a few scoring opportunities but just couldn't put it through. Paul Waschkau made tremendous back-to-back saves in the 78th minute to bring his final total to seven, but the Golden Eagles managed to deliver the dagger on a third-chance left-footed rifle by Emiliano Gutierrez from the edge of the penalty area.
