Softball Grabs Three Wins Over Penguins

HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo Softball completed a halted game with a 3-2 win and swept the scheduled doubleheader by scores of 3-2 and 4-3 on Thursday to claim the series against Dominican in Pacific West Conference play at the Vulcan Softball Field.

The day began with the completion of Wednesday's suspended contest, which the Vulcans won in walk-off fashion in the 10th inning on a Harley Acosta double to right field. The regularly scheduled doubleheader that followed saw Hawai'i Hilo rally from a deficit in both games, overcoming a 2-0 hole with three runs in the sixth in Game 1 and answering a three-run Dominican sixth with a walk-off two-run seventh in Game 2 — both runs on back-to-back squeeze bunts.

Janessa Santos was a workhorse in the circle throughout the series, throwing 8.2 total innings in the continuation and returning to start Game 2. Madison Rabe went the distance in Game 1 and Tehani Seto closed out Game 2 in relief.

Rayna White provided a clutch double play throw out at home from right field in the continuation game while smacking in the game-winning run in Game 1.

NOTES

  • Continuation of 3/4 Game 2: Dominican 2 - Hawai'i Hilo 3 (10 inn.)
    • Vulcans scored two in the bottom of the first — Lexie Tilton doubled to set up White to score on a wild pitch. Ava Monturio's infield ground ball couldn't be fielded cleanly, allowing Tilton to score from third base.
    • Dominican's two runs in the top of the second were both unearned, scoring on a pair of passed balls.
    • Play resumed Thursday morning at 10 a.m. with the score tied 2-2 entering the top of the ninth inning.
    • Dominican loaded the bases with two outs before Rabe entered in relief and induced a fly out to center to end the threat.
    • In the top of the 10th, Dominican's placed runner was gunned down at the plate after a fly ball to White in right field for the double play.
    • Acosta delivered the walk-off in the bottom half, doubling to right field to score pinch runner Sofia Femath from second base.
    • Santos pitched 8.2 innings, allowing four hits and two unearned runs while striking out five batters. She induced 12 ground outs.

Two of the three runs were unearned.
    • Rabe went the distance in the pitching circle, allowing two earned runs on five hits with 12 fly outs and seven ground outs.
  • Game 2: Hawai'i Hilo 4 - Dominican 3
    • Hawai'i Hilo took an early 2-0 lead on unearned runs — Piltz went around the horn on a bunt turned little league homer, and Ke'alohi Markham scored in the third on a throwing error by the second baseman.
    • Dominican rallied for three runs in the sixth capped by a two-run double down the left-field line to take a 3-2 lead.
    • Tehani Seto entered in relief and retired five of six batters faced.
    • In the seventh, Piltz singled and Ava Monturio later added another single to put runners on the corners. Breeann Leong and Markham each brought in a run on back-to-back squeeze bunt attempts for the gutsy walk-off win.
