Vulcans Capture PacWest Hawai‘i Challenge; No. 6 in Commissioner's Cup

HAWAI'I – The University of Hawai'i at Hilo has won the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge for the 2025-26 academic term.

The Vulcans amassed 27 points — the most since 2016-17 when HPU had 30 points — to capture their third straight win and fourth crown in the last five years.

"We are honored to capture the PacWest Hawai'i Challenge once again," Hawai'i Hilo director of athletics Patrick Guillen said. "This tremendous accomplishment is a reflection of the dedication and commitment of our entire athletics department, coaches, staff, and of course, our amazing student-athletes who work tirelessly each and every day to be and give their best. Congratulations also to our friends and colleagues at two outstanding institutions, HPU and Chaminade University of Honolulu, for such a competitive year that challenged all of us to be our very best."

HPU had 21 points while Chaminade picked up 18. Hawai'i Hilo enjoyed first-place points in seven of the 10 sports (men's soccer, women's soccer, women's cross country, women's volleyball, men's golf, women's golf, softball). The Sharks earned first-place points in men's basketball, women's basketball, women's tennis and baseball. The Silverswords got first-place points in men's basketball. First place finishes awarded three points, runner-ups with two and third-place with one.

PACWEST HAWAI'I CHALLENGE

The PacWest Hawai'i Challenge spans 10 sports among Hawai'i's three Division II schools. Head-to-head results in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball earn two points per win and one per tie. Each sport's final standings award three, two and one point(s) in finishing order. Women's cross country, men's golf and women's tennis are scored by PacWest Championships placement. The school with the most points across all 10 sports — 30 maximum — wins the challenge.

The PacWest Hawai'i Challenge traces its roots to the early 1980s when five Hawai'i schools formed NAIA District 2 and built fierce rivalries in men's basketball and what was regarded as the NAIA's premier volleyball league.

PACWEST CONFERENCE BOB HOGUE COMMISSIONER'S CUP

The PacWest Conference Commissioner's Cup, established in 2007-08, honors the athletics program with the strongest overall performance each academic year. Points are awarded based on regular-season conference standings for baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball with championship results counting for cross country, golf and tennis. In 2009-10, scoring changed from total points to average finish. Only sports with at least six participating teams count toward the cup. In 2023-24, it was renamed the Bob Hogue Commissioner's Cup in honor of the retiring commissioner who led the conference for 16 years.
