Lady Vulcans win in overtime

The University of Hawaii at Hilowent overtime to beat Chaminade University 72-61 in a Pacific West Conference match at the UHH gymnasium. 
 
The Vulcans struggled in the first half as they were 10-38 (26%) from the field, 1-9 (11%) from the arc and 4-5 (80%) from the free throw line. They were trailing by seven points at the half 25-32.
 
“We let the ball go on certain spots on the floor, where we shouldn't have let it go. It resulted in some easy shots and a lot of fouls on our part,” said UHH Head Coach David Kaneshiro, “They took advantage every time.”
 
In the second half, the Vulcans worked their way back to tie the game at 38 points after making a 3-point shot from Kirsty Imai. Their shooting improved as they hit 16-35 (46%) from the field and 4-8 (50%) from the 3-point arc. The second period ended with 61 points each.
 
In overtime, the Vulcans took back the lead after making a free throw shot from Kamie Imai, 62-61, and never looked back. Kristen Shimizu landed a 3-point shot which gave the Vulcans an 11 point lead and the victory. Overall the Vulcans were 28-79 (35%) from the field, 7-21 (33%) from the arc, and shot 9-11 (81%) from the free throw line.
 
“There's a lot of emotion going on. I'm not sure exactly the reason for the slow start but I'm glad they were able to regroup and get a win,” said Coach Kaneshiro.
 
“It's good to get a win on senior night.”
 
This was the last home game for eight seniors: Jamiea McDuffie, Kirsten Shimizu, Shannon Rousseau, Kirsty Imai, Natalie Mata, Jazlyn Afusia, Elise Spain and Jazmine Corpuz.
 
The Vulcans were led by Mata with 20 points, Kirsty Imai with 14 and Shimizu had 11. Kamai Imai added 15 points and 8 rebounds.
