HILO, Hawai'i – The University of Hawai'i at Hilo opened Pacific West Conference play with a 3-1 loss to Notre Dame de Namur University on the UH Hilo field.
The Vulcans (1-4-0 overall, 0-1-1 PacWest) had the advantage in shots (13-9), on goal (10-8) and corner kicks (7-4) but the Argonaut (2-3, 1-0) defense claimed the saves battle (0-5).
NDDN scored early on Matt DeQuiroz's goal nine minutes in and Jack Ewert's goal 26 minutes into the game. Ewert picked his second goal just two minutes into the second half. Omar Herrera picked up two saves.
The Vulcans got their goal when
Alejandro Patino broke through the Argonaut defense to pick up
Cristian Ruelas through ball. Patino collected the pass and race down the left side before slipping the ball under an outstretched goalie.
The Vulcans next host Fresno Pacific University in a 3 p.m. PacWest match on Monday, September 28 on the UHH field.
