SEASIDE, Calif.—Host Cal State Monterey Bay roared back with a ridiculous final round of -14 (274) to claim the trophy in their own tournament at the Otter Fall Invitational on Tuesday at the Bayonet-Blackhorse Golf Course.
The Otters finished at -8 for the three rounds (856), 12 strokes ahead of second place Colorado-Colorado Springs (+4) and Chico State (+7). That trio represents three teams in the NCAA Division II men's national golf rankings, with the Otters at No. 14, Chico State at 15
th and Colorado-Colorado Springs at No. 18.
It wasn't a good day for the Vulcans, who started the day by finishing the final few holes of round two, and they then played 18 holes to finish the tournament. They wrapped up with a 933 final (307-315-311), +69.
Jared Kinoshita, who shot a two-under 70 in the first round, turned in scores of 77 and 74 in rounds two and three (221) to finish +5 , tying for 22nd in the large field.
Taylor Patrick and
Ryan Roodzant were both 13 shots behind Kinoshita at +18.
UC San Diego's Adam Navigato fired a third round 65 to win the medalist honor going away, setting a tournament record in the process. He finished at -17 (69-65-65), seven shots ahead of CSUMB's Elis Svard (-10) and Chico State's Chris Crisologo (-7).
The Vulcans will now return home, playing their next two tournaments on the Big Island. Next Monday-Tuesday (Oct. 23-24) they will be at Waikoloa Kings Course for a tournament hosted by Dixie State, and on Oct. 27-28 they host their own Dennis Rose Intercollegiate at the Waikoloa Beach Course.
