KAILUA KONA, Hawai`i--No. 2 nationally ranked BYU-Hawaii opened their final season of women's tennis with a 9-0 win over Hawai`i Hilo on Wednesday morning at the Holua Tennis Center.
It was the first match of the season for the Vulcans as well, and the first of five matches here in Kona over the next six days.
Junior transfer
Sara Valero played the longest match of the day at No. 2 singles before eventually falling to Karen Liu, 6-4, 6-1. The Spain native had a 4-3 lead in the first set in a match that took over two hours before running out of gas in the second. At No. 1 singles,
Daniela Sanz Caseli had a 3-2 lead in the first set against the 2016 NCAA Division II top ranked player, Dallas Zhang, before the Chinese native took over 6-3, 6-1.
The temperatures were in the mid 80's with 75 percent humidity.
The Vulcans will practice tomorrow before returning to match play on Friday at 10 a.m. against Sonoma State.
