KAILUA KONA, Hawaii--UH Hilo's
Sara Valero lost a heartbreaker at No. 2 singles by literally a shot or two, allowing No. 22 nartionally ranked Sonoma State to claim a 9-0 women's tennis victory over the Vulcans on Friday afternoon at the Holua Tennis Center.
The Seawolves improved to 2-3 on the season with the win, while UHH dropped to 0-2.
Valero, a junior transfer from William Carey, battled SSU's Amanda Zuidema to the wire. Zuidema won the first set 6-2, but Valero countered by taking the second set by the same score. With the team score already decided, the third set was played in the pro set format, with the Seawolf winning 10-8.
Somona State took the rest of the matches in straight sets.Â
It won't get any easier for the Vulcans on Saturday when they take on No. 2 nationally ranked BYU-Hawaii again. Start time is 8 a.m.
