Hilo Headlines: The Vulcans will head to northern California for the final three games of the 2016-17 season, playing that trio of games in five days.
Trailblazers douse playoff hopes: It wasn't the kind of Senior Night that anyone envisioned when red-hot Dixie State drilled UH Hilo on Thursday night at the Civic Auditorium, 98-65. Learning a few days earlier that they were ranked eighth in the first official NCAA west region poll, the Trailblazers couldn't afford a stumble of any kind and they didn't. It dampened the senior festivities for UHH's lone graduator,
Parker Farris, although the 6-4 guard still led all scorers with 19 points.
Parker's Points: Farris goes into the final three games of his career with a 21.9 per game average and 504 total points this year. Unofficially, he currently has the second highest scoring average in school history, only behind Merriel Jenkins' 22.4 set in 1996-97. Farris has spent two years in a Vulcan uniform, scoring 889 points thus far and raining in 146 three-pointers. He has hit for 30 or more points in a game four times, with a career-high 36 points this year at BYU-Hawaii. He was named the PacWest Player of the Week after the Seasider game, a contest where he scored 22 points in the second half alone. He is shooting .876 percent from the free throw line and has knocked down 69 treys (3.0 a game).
Boarding Up the Civic: Hilo's Civic Auditorium has been the site of the two highest rebound totals in the PacWest this season. Back on Dec. 29,
Randan Berinobis pulled down a school and conference record 24 boards against Northwest Indian College, including nine on the offensive end. On Saturday night against BYU-Hawaii,
Brian Ishola grabbed 19 rebounds, seven on offense. That tied for the third highest rebound total in UHH school history. Here is a look at that list.

News and Notes: Senior guard
Parker Farris leads the Vulcans and is second in the PacWest in scoring at 21.9 points a game. He is second in the league in free throw percentage (.876), nailing 113 of 129 attempts. His 3.0 three-pointers a game is tied for second in the league. He scored 32 in the season opener against Simon Fraser, had 30 versus Seattle Pacific and 36 at BYU-Hawaii...North Dakota State transfer
Brian Ishola averages 15.3 points and 8.8 rebounds a game, the latter leading the team. He is third in the PacWest Conference in boards per game. He has eight double-doubles on the season...
Ryley Callaghan (10.9) and
Darius Johnson-Wilson (9.2) are just on one side or the other of double figures...Callaghan leads the squad with 89 assists on the season...The Vulcans are shooting .736 from the free throw line, the third most accurate mark in the PacWest...Farris and Callaghan are the only Vulcans to start in all 23 games this season…
Randan Berinobis has started in 20 of UHH's 23 games, his 6.2 rebounds is second on the Vulcans and he averages 8.9 points a game.
Head Coach GE Coleman: Vulcan head coach
GE Coleman (36-63) is in his 4th season as the leader of the program. Inheriting a team that had won just six games he has steadily built the team into a PWC tournament contender. Prior to arriving on the Big Island, Coleman was the associate head coach at Central Washington for six seasons, and an assistant with the Wildcats for another five years prior to that. He was an assistant for two seasons at Eastern Washington. His assistant,
Mark McLaughlin, is a former CWU standout who twice led the nation in scoring at over 27 points a game.
A Look Back: Last year, the Vulcans began the year on a horrific nine-game losing streak, but righted the ship enough to finish 9-11 in conference play (9-15 overall), just missing the Pac West Conference tournament by one game.
Hawk Headlines: Holy Names will play their final home game of the season on Tuesday against the Vulcans. They have wins this month over Notre Dame de Namur (74-71) and Academy of Art (57-52). UH Hilo won the match-up between the two teams back on Jan. 19 in Hilo, 89-85. Jason Webster leads the Hawks at 15.9 points a game while Jewels Sanders adds 12.8 points an outing. Holy Names won the lone game played last year between the two schools in Oakland, 80-78.
Art History: Academy of Art will take on Concordia tonight before facing the Vulcans on Thursday. Against the Eagles, they will try to snap a three-game losing streak. Chris Salas leads a balanced Urban Knight attack with 10.2 points a game and 5.6 rebounds. Academy of Art has three home games this week, but they will be played at three different sites: Kezar Pavilion, City College of San Francisco and San Francisco State. The Vulcans have won the last two games played between the two teams.
Penguin Post: Dominican sits one slot above UHH in the PacWest standings at 8-10 in league play. The two teams played back on Dec. 19, with UHH racing away what might have been their most complete game of the season, 78-41. A different Dominican team awaits this time, having won four of their last five games, including an 85-81 upset of Azusa Pacific. Jeremiah Gray leads his team with 16.1 points a game. Dominican will play Fresno Pacific on Thursday before wrapping up their season against UHH.
