Farris hits for 39, Vulcans edge Hawks, 94-92

Box Score OAKLAND, Calif.--Parker Farris scored a career high 39 points and Ryley Callaghan hit two free throws with four seconds left to help lift Hawaii Hilo to a 94-92 road victory over Holy Names on Tuesday night in Oakland.

The win moved UHH's record to 9-15 on the season and to 7-11 in the Pacific West Conference. The Hawks fell to 6-21 on the year and to 5-14 in conference play. The game was the first of a season finale, three-game road swing in the bay area for the Vulcans.

Farris had 20 points in the first half and 19 in the second, but it was also Callaghan's pressure-packed free throws with four seconds left and his driving lay-up with 35 seconds left that helped seal the win. Holy Names' shot at the buzzer to tie the game bounced off the rim.

Farris, who came into the game averaging 21.9 points a game, hit 12-of-20 shots from the field, a collegiate-best-equaling 9-of-16 from three-point range and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. He also had eight rebounds and three assists.

Brian Ishola added 23 points and 12 rebounds, his ninth double-double of the year. Callaghan finished with 18 points and six assists.

Farris came out firing from the opening tap. He hit a three-pointer 15 seconds into the game and drained another three minutes later to give UHH a 11-4 lead. The Vulcans led 30-16 after another Farris trey at the 10:32 mark to give them their largest lead of the first half.

But the Hawks responded with a 12-0 run to take a 36-35 lead, and the two teams then traded baskets the rest of the half. The Vulcans went into the locker room ahead, 45-43.

UH Hilo zipped out ahead early in the second half, taking a 10-point lead on a Callaghan basket just three and a half minutes in. The Vulcans still led by 10 at 13:43 after an Arnold Silva basket, but the Hawks again rallied with an 8-0 run to pull within two points (65-63). Like the first half, the teams traded baskets after that.

The final minute of play featured Callaghan's driving lay-up (35 seconds, 91-88), a basket by Jewel Sanders (.26 seconds, 91-90), an Eric Watree free throw with 19 seconds left (92-90), and a Sanders dunk with 11 seconds remaining (92-92). That set up the final UHH possession, in which Callaghan was fouled on a drive to the hoop, setting up his winning free throws.

The Vulcans shot 54 percent from the field and converted 10-of-22 three-point attempts. They also outrebounded the Hawks, 35-24.

Dante Robinson led Holy Names with 23 points, Jason Webster had 22 and Andre Green added 21.

The Vulcans will continue this final road swing with a Thursday game at Academy of Art, 7:30 PST.
