HONOLULU, Hawai`i--Sometimes the margin between victory and defeat is substantial, and sometimes it is razor thin.
For the Hawai`i Hilo women's tennis team, yesterday's 9-0 win over Chaminade was very substantial. Today's 5-4 loss to Holy Names fits the latter category, as it turns out just two games and a handful of points were the difference between winning and losing on Friday morning at the Ala Moana Regional Tennis Center on Oahu.
UH Hilo fell to 2-6 on the season with the loss, while the Hawks improved to 2-7.
All six singles matches and three doubles contests all count the same, just one point. The Vulcans and Hawks split the singles matches (three wins each), and none of them were close. All went in straight sets, with UHH picking up wins on court one by
Daniela Sanz Caseli (6-0, 6-2), court two with
Sara Valero (6-0, 6-2) and No. 6 singles with
Napapon Vorasane (6-2, 6-4).
Two of the doubles matches were decided without much drama, with Sanz Caseli and Valero rolling at No. 1 (8-2) and Holy Names taking care of business quickly on court three, 8-3. The suspence of the day was on doubles court No. 2, and as it turned out the best match of the morning and the difference maker.
There, Holy Names' Jahan Bayramova and Dominque Ernst went extra time to edge UHH's
Kinsey Volkart and
Cheyenne Schula, 9-7. With the match tied at 7-7, the Hawk duo won the final two games of the pro set to take the tight match.
"That was a tough one that could have gone either way," said Vulcans head coach
Tina McDermott. "Kinsey and Cheyenne gave it a great effort, and just a couple of points were the difference."
The Vulcans will return to play tomorrow morning, taking on Chaminade again. Start time is 9 a.m.
