LA JOLLA, Calif.--A road trip that spanned nearly the entire state of California, over the course of 13 days with 10 matches, finally came to an end on Thursday for the UH Hilo women's tennis team with a 7-2 loss to San Diego Christian College on the UC San Diego Northview Courts.
The weary Vulcans will now return to Hilo to rest and then prepare for the Pacific West Conference Championships, to be held April 19-22 in Surprise, Arizona.
UH Hilo comes back with a 5-17 overall record. San Diego Christian, ranked No. 8 nationally in the NAIA is now 11-3. All three of their losses this season have been to NCAA Division I teams, and they are now 3-0 against Division II schools.
The Vulcans picked up wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 2 singles, but the rest of the day belong to the Hawks.
Sara Valero rode to a 6-2, 6-2 win on singles court two over Brooke Ferslov-Jensen. The No. 3 doubles tandem of
Kinsey Volkart and Shanise Kaaikala also won for the second day in a row, with an 8-6 victory over Ferslov-Jensen and Miriam Boeta. Volkart and Kaaikala defeated a duo from Arizona Christian on Wednesday, helping the Vulcans to a 5-4 win over the Firestorm.
But the other two doubles matches went quickly in favor of the Hawks, and all of the singles losses were in straight sets. Volkart came the closest to victory with a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Aleksaundra Emelianova. UHH No. 1 singles player
Daniela Sanz Caseli had to retire in the second set of her match.
